Christian Bale was too big to play Batman.
He turned up for Batman Begins at around 220 pounds and Nolan sent him back. In Bale's own words, he wasn't the size Christopher Nolan wanted, so he had to cut about 20lb just before shooting. The most intimidating superhero body of the 2000s was made by getting smaller.
Bale isn't the only one whose numbers refuse to behave.
Simon Waterson, the trainer who built Chris Evans for The First Avenger and Daniel Craig for five Bond films, gave the numbers to Men's Fitness: Evans went from 77kg to 82kg, and dropped his body fat from 12.5% to 8%. Five kilos on the scale and four and a half points of body fat off. That's the super-soldier serum.
Meanwhile Chris Hemsworth, playing a Norse god, walked onto the Love and Thunder set at 107kg after a 30-week build from 94kg. Twenty-nine pounds of deliberate weight gain, documented week by week on his own platform.
Two Marvel leads, two "superhero physiques," and one of them is a recomposition you could plausibly run this year while the other sits at the outer edge of what's been measured in drug-free athletes. Almost nobody tells you which is which.
So I did what those articles don't. I took the published height, weight and body-fat figures for seven famous movie physiques and ran every one through the same body-composition math.
Five of the seven are genuinely available to a normal person with a job. The other two aren't, for reasons that have nothing to do with how hard you train.
Let's go through it properly.
What FFMI Is, and Why It Settles This?
Every celebrity physique article gives you a workout but almost none give you a target.
"Get shredded like Tyler Durden" tells you nothing about how much muscle Tyler Durden actually had. And that turns out to be the single most useful thing you could know, because it determines whether you're two years away or twenty.
Well, there’s a decent way for this.
Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) measures your lean mass relative to your height, which is what BMI should have done and didn't. The formula is simple:
FFMI = lean body mass (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Then a height correction, because taller frames score artificially low on a squared-height denominator: + 6.1 × (1.80 − your height in metres).
The number matters because of a 1995 study by Kouri and colleagues in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine. They measured 157 male athletes: 83 who used anabolic steroids and 74 who didn't. The drug-free group topped out at a normalised FFMI of about 25.0. The steroid users routinely went past it.
Two honest things though:
First, 25 is a descriptive upper bound from one sample, not a lie detector. As a recent reappraisal of the Kouri data points out, the paper described where a population of non-users clustered. It never claimed that crossing 25 proves anything about an individual. Genetics, frame size and measurement error all live in that gap.
Second, body-fat percentages reported in celebrity press are estimates. Nobody DEXA-scanned Brad Pitt in 1998. I'm using the published figures because they're the only figures that exist, and I'll flag where they're shaky.
With that on the table, here's every character run through the same math.

Method: FFMI = LBM ÷ height², normalised with +6.1 × (1.80 − height in m). Body-fat figures are press-reported estimates, not lab measurements. Where a source range exists I've used the mid-point. Reeves' and Craig's weights are the least well documented of the seven; treat those two rows as ±1 FFMI point.
An untrained adult male typically sits somewhere around 18 to 19. Serious drug-free lifters plateau in the 22 to 24 band. So read that table again with that scale in mind.
Tyler Durden, the most copied "shredded" body in film history, carries roughly 1.5 points of lean mass more than an untrained guy. He is not muscular. He is lean, on a normal amount of muscle, filmed beautifully.
Captain America is a 22.3. A super-soldier serum, on paper, is worth about three and a half FFMI points and a decent cut.
And Thor sits at 25.6, past the point where the Kouri sample stopped finding drug-free athletes, on a man who is 6'3" and genetically unusual before he touches a barbell.
That's the whole argument of this article in one column of numbers. The bodies you think are unreachable mostly aren't. The two that are hardest are hard for completely opposite reasons.
Size and Leanness Cost Different Things
Here's where the standard "hardest physiques ranked" list goes wrong. It ranks on a single dimension: size. Big equals hard.
Body composition doesn't work that way. Mass and leanness are two separate things.
Mass is bought with years. It accumulates slowly and it stays.
A meta-analysis of 111 resistance-training studies covering 1,927 participants found an average whole-body muscle gain of about 1.5kg across typical study durations. That's the honest scale of the thing. Muscle arrives in kilos per year, not per month.Leanness is bought with daily friction. It arrives in weeks and leaves in weeks. It costs you social meals, hunger, and a running background process in your head.
Plot the seven characters on those two axes and the map tells you something the size ranking can't.

The two genuinely brutal ones, Durden and Thor, sit in opposite corners. One asks for almost no muscle and a body-fat level that the American Council on Exercise classifies as essential fat, 2-5% for men. The other asks for a body-fat level anyone can hold and an amount of tissue that the research struggles to find drug-free examples of.
Everything in the middle of that grid is a normal training project.
If I were starting over, this is the question I'd ask. Not "which body is biggest," but "which of these two do I actually want to spend years on."
The Seven Physiques, Honestly Assessed
Difficulty scores below are composites of four things: the lean-mass gap from an average untrained starting point, the body-fat demand, realistic time-to-build, and, the one nobody scores, ongoing maintenance cost.
1. John Wick - Lean & Tactical
Difficulty: 4/10
Est. body fat: 10–13%
Est. FFMI: ~20
What it actually is: the least muscular physique on this list, and the one whose training is least about muscle. Keanu Reeves reportedly prepared for around four to five months before each film, four to five hours a day, across judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, jujutsu and tactical shooting with Taran Butler of Taran Tactical.
Fight choreographer Jonathan Eusebio has described the mix: judo and jiu-jitsu as the base, karate-derived strikes, sambo, shoot wrestling, and Filipino kali for the knife work. Reeves' judo got convincing enough that the International Judo Federation gave him an honorary black belt.
The paradox: Wick has the cheapest body and the most expensive training on this list. What you're responding to when you watch him move is thousands of hours of motor skill, not tissue. You can build the body in about eighteen months. You cannot build the movement in eighteen months, and no amount of hypertrophy programming gets you closer to it.
Training focus: three lifting days for a base, plus two to four combat-sport sessions a week. Grip, hips, and mid-back do the heavy lifting for the look.
Nutrition: maintenance calories, protein at 1.6–2.0 g/kg, no cutting phase required. You're at a body fat most men can hold without white-knuckling.
Can the average person get here? Yes, and faster than any other entry. Two to three years of consistent lifting plus a martial art you'd do anyway.
Best for: anyone over 35. Anyone with joints they'd like to keep. Anyone who'd rather be capable than photogenic.
2. Tyler Durden - Lean & Shredded
Difficulty: 8/10
Est. body fat: 5–8% (reported)
Est. FFMI: ~20.4
What it actually is: the most misread physique in cinema. Pitt was reportedly around 155lb at roughly 5% body fat, and his trainer Lindsay told Men's Journal the look was modelled on professional boxers: shoulders back, wide back, triceps carrying more visual weight than biceps, shredded torso.
Run the math and you get an FFMI of about 20.4. Roughly what a lean recreational lifter carries after a couple of focused years.
So why is it 8/10? Because of the second axis. ACE puts men's essential fat at 2–5%, and sustained operation below the essential range is associated with hormonal disruption and immune suppression. A reported 5% is not a fitness level. It's a photoshoot condition, held for a window, at real physiological cost.
The trap is that the building half looks easy, so people assume the whole thing is. Then they spend three years in a permanent deficit chasing the last four percentage points and lose the modest muscle that made it work in the first place.
Training focus: moderate volume hypertrophy to defend the muscle you have, heavy enough loading to keep it, conditioning that doesn't eat recovery.
Nutrition: the actual project. A long, patient deficit with protein pushed toward the 2.3–3.1 g/kg range the ISSN suggests for retaining lean mass while hypocaloric.
Can the average person get here? The 10–12% version, absolutely, and it looks close to the movie in most lighting. The 5% version, briefly, at a cost most people shouldn't pay.
Best for: people who are already lean, already trained, and want a defined peak for something specific. Not a year-round target.
3. James Bond - Lean & Athletic
Difficulty: 6/10
Est. body fat: 10–13%
Est. FFMI: ~21.9
What it actually is: the most copied male physique goal of the last twenty years, and reasonably the most sensible. Craig's brief to Waterson was explicit: he shouldn't look like a bodybuilder, he should look like a product of the job.
The look is a proportions problem more than a size problem. Shoulders and upper back carry it, waist stays tight, body fat sits low enough for definition and high enough to live on.
The detail worth stealing: Waterson's programming changed for every single film, including a deliberate reduction in mass between the first two. We broke that down properly in our full James Bond workout guide, so I won't re-run it here. The short version: the most famous movie body of the century was never held static, not for one film.
Training focus: compound lifts in the 4-8 rep range during build phases, shoulder and upper-back priority, sprint and carry work for the athletic read.
Nutrition: unremarkable and effective. Six meals a day during shooting, nothing eliminated, protein at the 1.6-2.2 g/kgthat a 49-study meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine identifies as the point where gains plateau.
Can the average person get here? Yes. Eighteen to thirty months from an average start. This is the default recommendation for most readers and I'd stand behind it.
Best for: the largest slice of people reading this. Desk job, three or four training days, wants to look good in a shirt and still be able to run.
4. Captain America - Balanced Athletic
Difficulty: 7.5/10
Est. body fat: ~8%
Est. FFMI: ~22.3
What it actually is: the most instructive transformation of the seven, because the numbers are trainer-reported rather than tabloid-estimated: 77kg to 82kg weight and 12.5% body fat to 8%.
Waterson has been blunt about where Evans started: "He just trained his biceps, and his chest, and his abs, and that was it. He didn't deadlift, he didn't do many pull-ups, he didn't have very overdeveloped legs." The rebuild was squats, deadlifts, pulling, heavy compounds and bodyweight circuits.
Why the difficulty is higher than Bond despite a similar gap: 8% body fat at 82kg is a much narrower ledge than 12% at 78kg. You have less room for a bad fortnight, and the maintenance cost is real. Evans himself said that after leaving the role he'd shed about 15 pounds simply because he wasn't hitting the gym as hard. The body was rented, not owned.
Training focus: heavy low-rep compounds as the spine of the program, plyometrics for the athletic quality, posterior chain given equal billing to the mirror muscles.
Nutrition: the hard part, as per Waterson: eating enough to add muscle without storing the excess as fat. A tight surplus, high protein, patience.
Can the average person get here? The mass, yes. Three to four years. Holding 8% alongside it is where most people quietly settle at 11% instead, which honestly looks close enough that nobody but you will notice.
Best for: people who want proportional, athletic size and are willing to give it several years rather than several months.
5. Batman - Powerful & Functional
Difficulty: 6.5/10
Est. body fat: 10-12%
Est. FFMI: ~22.7
What it actually is: the most misrepresented entry on the list, because the story people remember is the wrong story.
Christian Bale dropped to 120lb for The Machinist, then had a handful of months to become Batman. He overshot to 220lb and then, in his own words, had to cut back down: "I wasn't the size that Christopher Nolan wanted, so I had to cut down 20lb or so just before shooting."
Simply, the Batman physique was achieved by being too big and then getting smaller. Nolan didn't want the 220lb version. The on-screen number is around 190lb, which is an FFMI of roughly 22.7 at a comfortable body fat.
The takeaway: Batman is closer to Bond than to Thor. It reads as powerful because of frame, posture, back development and how the character moves, not because of extreme mass or extreme leanness.
Also worth saying plainly: Bale's method-acting weight swings are not a fitness template. Medical commentary has repeatedly flagged the health cost of that pattern, and the Machinist end of it was starvation, not conditioning.
Training focus: strength as the organising principle. Heavy squats, deadlifts, presses, rows. Combat conditioning on top.
Nutrition: a controlled surplus, run long. No cleverness required.
Can the average person get here? Yes, over three or four years. Of the "big" physiques, this is the most reachable.
Best for: people who like getting strong and want the physique to be a side effect of that.
6. Superman - Large & Muscular
Difficulty: 9/10
Est. body fat: 8–10%
Est. FFMI: ~24 (up to ~25.5 on the higher reported weights)
What it actually is: the boundary case. Henry Cavill trained under Mark Twight at Gym Jones, the same coach who prepared the cast of 300, for roughly six months of dedicated mass work before Man of Steel, reportedly eating 5,000 calories a day at the peak of the build and training twice daily by the two-month mark.
His FFMI lands somewhere between 24.0 and 25.5, depending on which reported weight you believe. Either way it's the largest number on this list outside Thor, on a 6'1" frame, built over six months of full-time work.
What I'd flag: this is the physique where the honest answer stops being "yes, with time." For most people it's "probably not, and here's the version you can have." A 6'1" man at FFMI 22.5 and 11% body fat has an outstanding physique by any real-world standard, and the visual gap to Cavill is smaller than the numeric gap suggests, especially clothed.

Training focus: high-volume hypertrophy across years, heavy pulling emphasis for the V-taper, mass-phase discipline.
Nutrition: a sustained surplus measured in years, not weeks, with the fat-gain management that implies.
Can the average person get here? A minority can, with excellent genetics, a decade, and a life arranged around it. Most can't, and that's a statement about statistics rather than effort.
Best for: young lifters with long runways, large frames, and the patience for a five-year project.
7. Thor - Massive & Strong
Difficulty: 10/10
Est. body fat: 10–12%
Est. FFMI: ~25.6
What it actually is: the outer limit, and the best-documented build on this list because Hemsworth published it himself. Thirty weeks, 94kg to 107kg, eating roughly every two to three hours, six meals during work days plus a large dinner after training. Trainer Luke Zocchi has put the intake at around 4,000–4,500 calories a day.
At 107kg and an estimated 11% body fat, the normalised FFMI is about 25.6, past where the Kouri sample found drug-free athletes. I'm not making a claim about any individual, and I'd ask you not to either.
What I am saying is that this specific combination of mass and leanness sits outside the range the published research documents for drug-free populations, and any article telling you a 12-week program gets you there is either uninformed or lying.
The detail that settles it: Hemsworth doesn't maintain Thor either. Preparing for Avengers: Doomsday, Zocchi told The Independent that compared to previous outings the pair "haven't pushed anywhere near as hard on this film", running 45-minute strength sessions every other day on a push-pull-legs rotation.
Forty-five minutes, every other day. That's a normal person's program. The 107kg version was a temporary, professionally supported peak that even Thor doesn't live at.
Training focus: if you want the direction rather than the destination, high-volume hypertrophy with progressive overload, run for years.
Nutrition: a large sustained surplus and the ability to eat when you're not hungry, which is a genuinely underrated skill.
Can the average person get here? No. The adjacent, achievable version is "big and strong at 12% body fat," which is a fantastic goal and a completely different one.
Best for: as a direction of travel for large-framed people who love training volume. Not as a target.

Ranked by What Actually Matters: Can You Keep It?
Here's the ranking I'd argue is more useful than any "hardest to build" list, because building is a phase and keeping is a life.
Tier 1: Keepable indefinitely with three to four training days a week John Wick: James Bond and Batman.
All three sit at 10-13% body fat, which is above the ACE "fitness" range floor and comfortably above essential fat. All three sit at an FFMI a committed drug-free lifter reaches. You can hold these while having a job, a family and an occasional dessert.
Tier 2: Keepable, but it costs you something every single week: Captain America and Superman.
Both require sustained low body fat on top of substantial mass. Doable. Not free. Evans losing 15lb the moment the contract ended is the honest data point here.
Tier 3: Peak states, held for a window: Tyler Durden and Thor.
Opposite corners of the map, same verdict. Both are peak states achieved with professional support for a defined window. Neither actor holds them.
If you take one thing from this article, take this: the ranking that matters isn't the difficulty of acquisition but the cost of retention. Almost every celebrity workout article scores the first and silently ignores the second, which is why so many people build a physique they then can't afford.
The Part of the Physique You Literally Cannot Train
Before you pick, there's a variable in every one of these images that isn't muscle, isn't fat, and isn't available to you.
Hugh Jackman has been open about the Wolverine protocol: three months of preparation, escalating water intake toward roughly three gallons a day, then a full stop about 36 hours before a shirtless scene. He's said it can strip up to ten pounds of subcutaneous water. He's also said, repeatedly and unprompted, don't do this at home.
For Deadpool & Wolverine he added the rest of the stack: a team of eight, chef-prepared meals, macro tracking, and a makeup artist applying oil between takes so the skin caught the light correctly.
Zac Efron went further and paid for it. On Baywatch he used Lasix and other diuretics, and told Men's Health that he developed insomnia and fell into a prolonged depression afterward, which he attributed to taking too many diuretics for too long. His assessment of the result: "I don't know if that's really attainable. There's just too little water in the skin. Like, it's fake; it looks CGI'd."
The man inside the most-referenced beach physique of the 2010s describes it as looking computer-generated.
So a measurable fraction of what you're comparing yourself against is dehydration, oil, lighting, camera lens and grading and not the tissue. You cannot train for it, and there's no diet that produces it, because what you're looking at is a production decision rather than a body.
And the target has been drifting upward for longer than film has been the main culprit. In 1999, Pope and colleagues measured the physical dimensions of popular American action figures across three decades and scaled them allometrically to the height of a real 1.78m man.
The figures got progressively more muscular over time, with several modern ones exceeding the dimensions of the largest human bodybuilders. The paper was published the same year Fight Club came out.
Twenty-five years of that, and then Instagram compressed the comparison set from "people in my town" to "the top 0.01% of physiques on Earth, filtered."
None of which means you shouldn't have a physique goal. It means you should pick your goal from the numbers rather than from a still frame.
Which Physique Is Right for You? A Decision Guide
Answer these four questions honestly and the map narrows fast.
Q1. How much body fat are you carrying right now?
Above 20%: your first project is a cut, regardless of which character you eventually want. You cannot see any of these physiques through a layer that thick, and running a mass phase from here makes the gap bigger. Twelve to sixteen weeks in a deficit, then reassess. 15–20%: you're in build territory. Pick a target and start adding.
Under 15%: you can go either direction. Your choice is genuinely open.
Q2. How many hours a week can you give this, in a bad week, not a good one?
Three to five hours: Wick, Bond. Both are built on three or four sessions plus conditioning you'd probably enjoy anyway.
Five to seven hours: Batman, Captain America enter range.
Eight or more, for years, with sleep and food organised around it: Superman becomes a conversation.
Q3. What's your relationship with food?
If restriction spirals for you, or you've had a rough history with dieting, take the low-body-fat physiques off the table entirely. Bond at 12% and Batman at 11% are excellent targets that don't require living in a deficit.
If you're comfortable with structured eating and a long patient surplus, the mass archetypes open up.
Q4. What's your frame and your training age?
Long limbs, narrow clavicles, small joints: the leanness-driven archetypes will flatter you far more than the mass ones. Wick and Bond, all day.
Broad frame, thick joints, already two-plus years of training: Batman and Captain America are the efficient targets.
Under 25, broad-framed, and prepared to spend five years? Superman is the only entry where a long runway genuinely changes the answer.

How To Train Toward an Archetype (Rather Than Copying a Routine)
The two-axis map isn't just for choosing. It tells you the order of operations, which is where most people go wrong.
Step 1: Find your current coordinates
Estimate your body fat, calculate your FFMI, and put yourself on the same map as the characters. This takes ten minutes and it's the single highest-value thing in this article. You cannot plan a route without a starting point.
Step 2: Read the gap on both axes separately
Say you're 6'0", 80kg, 20% body fat. Lean mass is 64kg, FFMI about 19.1. Bond is roughly 2.8 points of lean mass away and eight points of body fat away. Those are two projects, and they don't run at the same time.
Step 3: Sequence them correctly
If your body-fat gap is larger than about six percentage points, cut first. You'll be able to see what you're building, your surplus afterwards will partition better, and you'll stop chasing definition that's hiding under a layer you refuse to address.
If your mass gap is the bigger one and you're already under 15%, build first. Adding lean tissue at 20%+ is inefficient and demoralising.
Step 4: Give each phase enough runway to work
Muscle arrives on the order of 1.5kg across a typical training block, faster in your first year, slower after. A four-week program cannot move an FFMI point. Think in blocks of twelve to sixteen weeks and years of blocks.
Step 5: Re-plot every twelve weeks and change one thing
Don’t focus on five things, just take one. If lifts are progressing and bodyweight is drifting the right way at the right speed, change nothing at all.
That loop is the whole method, and it's also exactly where a static plan stops being useful. A downloaded routine doesn't know your coordinates, doesn't know your gap, can't tell you which phase you're in, and never re-plots. It's the same document on week one and week forty.

The Uncomfortable Part
Well, there's a reason the "which movie physique" question is more popular than "what should my body fat be."
The movie characters make the goal feel narrative. It’s like, you're not dieting, you're becoming someone. That's genuinely motivating, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
Motivation is scarce and if a fictional assassin gets you into the gym on a Tuesday in February, take it.
The failure isn't picking a character. It's picking one without knowing what it costs, and then reading your inability to pay a bill nobody itemised as a personal defect.
Here's the itemised version, one more time.
Captain America is eleven pounds and a cut. Batman is a physique that had to get smaller before the camera liked it.
